5a2-Pinnacle Training:
Defining Categories:
Total Points with Subcategories Checklist

Let me give you this scenario. Let’s say you are in a parent conference and are reviewing the student’s grades. You have printed out a report listing all of the assignments and the student’s score on each assignment and you have shown the parent the student’s current grade in your class. However the parent says, “Gee I would really like to know how my child is doing on tests, homework, labs, etc.... Can you show me?” You can provide this information easily if your grades are set up with subcategories.

To set up the CATEGORY of Total Point use the following checklist.

Step 1

Open a class using File>Open or select.

Step 2 Select Define> Categories. The category window will appear.

Step 3 Select on Edit. Change the category description to Total Points.

Step 4

Select Numeric for Reporting Preference.

Step 5 Choose Total Points (Summation Percentage) for Method of Grading (this is the default setting).
Step 6

Choose Streetsboro BreakPoints for Letter Grades BPs.

Step 7

Type 100 for Category Weight.

To set up the SUBCATEGORIES, follow the checklist for each subcategory.

Step 8

Select ADD to add an additional category. This process must be followed for each subcategory.

Step 9

For Description label your category as tests, homework, projects, etc.

Step 10

For Reporting Preference select Numeric.

Step 11

For Method of Grading, select Total points (Summation Percentage).

Step 12

For Letter Grade BP’s, select Streetsboro BreakPoints.

Step 13

The Category Weight for each subcategory is 0.

Step 14

Repeat the above for each subcategory (Homework, Test, Projects). Remember that the category weight for subcategories is 0.

Step 15

Select OK when done.

Step 16

Once you have set up your categories, you should proceed to Defining Assignments.
